TriCor, fenofibrate

Chemical Name
Fenofibrate

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Fenofibrate

Non-Active Ingredients: lactose monohydrate, polyethylene Glycol 6000, poloxamer 188, and magnesium stearate.

Indications
Fenofibrate is indicated to reduce cholesterol and triclygerides in the blood. High levels of these fats are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), vascular disease, plaques that builds up in the arteries, and heart disease.

How It Works
Fenofibrate belongs to a class of medications known as fibrates. Fenofibrate helps to reduce the levels of cholesterol and triclygerides in the blood. Fenofibrate when combined with a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat will help reduce elevated levels of: low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (Total-C), Triglycerides, and apolipoprotein (Apo B). Fenofibrate also increases high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C - "good cholesterol"), in adults with primary hyperlipidemia or mixed dyslipidemia. It is also indicated in the treatment of patients with hypertriglyceridemia.

Dosage
Tablets (145 mg, 160 mg, 200 mg)
The usual dosage of fenofibrate is one 145 mg tablet once per day administered as an oral dose. Your doctor may recommend increasing your dosage based on individual reaction to the drug.

Precautions

Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you have a history of hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, reduced liver function, severe kidney disease, reduced kidney function, hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid gland), diabetes, gallbladder disease or have ever had a severe skin reaction to other fibrates. If you have a history of any of the above mentioned conditions you may not be able to take TriCor or you may require a reduced dosage regimen, confer with your doctor.
