Amaryl, glimepirideChemical NamesGlimepiride Ingredients Active Ingredients: glimepiride Non-Active Ingredients: lactose (hydrous), sodium starch glycolate, povidone, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate. In addition, Amaryl 1 mg tablets contain ferric oxide red, Amaryl 2 mg tablets contain ferric oxide yellow and FD&C blue #2 Aluminum Lake, and Amaryl 4 mg tablets contain FD&C blue #2 Aluminum Lake. Indications Glimepiride is used, in conjunction with a proper diet and exercise program, to control high blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea-type antidiabetic that works by stimulating the release of insulin. When insulin is deficient or poorly responded to by the body, as it is in type 2 diabetes, this improves blood sugar without adverse effect. Dosage Available tablet sizes: 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, 4 mg. There is no fixed dosage regimen for the management of type 2 diabetes – it must be measured by a doctor to match an individual’s body weight, insulin resistance, and other factors. The usual starting dosage is 1-2 mg once daily, administered in the morning with breakfast. This can then be gradually increased to 1 to 4 mg, taken once daily. The maxiumum recommended dose is 8 mg once daily. Amaryl’s efficacy should be monitored by measurement of HbA1c. Precautions Glimepiride is not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing mothers. Data is currently insufficient to recommend for pediatric use.
