Indications
Lamictal tablets and indicated for the treatment of patients with epilepsy. It is an anti-epileptic medication, also called an anti-convulsant. Lamotrigine can also be used to delay mood episodes in adults with bi-polar disorder.
How It Works
Lamotrigine is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least two years old.
Dosage
Tablets (100mg)
The dose of Lamictal should be determined by your healthcare provider. Dosages will vary based on several factors: the condition being treated, your age, weight, other medication you are taking, and any other conditions you may have.
Precautions
Lamictal is contraindicated in people who are allergic to Lamotrigine or other ingredients of this drug. Consult your doctor before taking Lamictal, especially if you have a history of: kidney disease, liver disease, depression or heart disease. You may require a reduced dosage, a dose adjustment or you may not be able to take this medication
There is the possibility of an increase in thoughts about suicide while taking this medication. Your doctor should check with you at regular intervals. Do not miss any appointments with your doctor.
Call your doctor immediately if you have any new or worsening metal symptoms, such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.
Do not stop taking lamotrigine without first talking to your doctor, even if you feel fine. You may have increased seizures if you stop taking lamotrigine suddenly. Gradually decrease the dosage size before you stop the medication completely.
Contact your doctor if your seizures get worse or you have them more often while taking lamotrigine.
Be careful if you drive or operate machinery because this medication can cause drowsiness and vision problems. Make sure you are able to see clearly on this medication.
This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking lamotrigine, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Taking this medication while pregnant can cause birth defects. Do not breast feel while taking this medication either. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Lamictal, if you are taking: hormonal forms of birth control (pills, injections, implants, or skin patches), carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol), divalproex (Depakote), primidone (Mysoline), phenytoin (Dilantin), oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton), ifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane) or valproic acid (Depakene).
Hormonal birth control methods can make lamotrigine less effective, which may cause increased seizures. Your lamotrigine dose may need to be adjusted when you start or stop using birth control pills. You may also have lamotrigine side effects while you are on your ‘week off’ of birth control pills. Also make sure to tell your doctor if you plan to stop taking birth control pills.
Before using this lamotrigine, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how lamotrigine works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that lamotrigine may cause the following minor side effects: dizziness or drowsiness, blurred vision, mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, headache, lack of coordination, weight loss, sleep problems (insomnia), unusual dreams or runny or stuffy nose. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.
Call your doctor at the first sign of skin rash or at once if you have any of these serious side effects: fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash, flu symptoms, muscle pain, chest pain, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, fever, chills, body aches, tenderness, weakness with fever or flu symptoms and dark-colored urine or nausea, low fever, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, stomach pain, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
This medication can cause a very severe or even life-threatening skin rash, especially in young children and in people allergic to seizure medications. A skin rash is more likely if you are taking lamotrigine together with valproic acid (Depakene) or divalproex (Depakote). Seek emergency medical attention if you have a fever, sore throat, swollen glands, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash.
If you have been told to stop taking lamotrigine because of skin rash, you may not be able to take it again in the future.
Call your doctor immediately if you have any severe symptoms such as: mood swings, behavior changes, anxiety, depression, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or if you have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.
If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose include: blurred vision, problems with coordination, increased seizures, feeling light-headed, or fainting.
Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
