Indications
Neurontin (gabapentin) is indicated for the management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Neurontin is also indicated as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures with and without secondary generalization for patients over 12 years of age with epilepsy.

How It Works
The mechanism of action of gabapentin is not precisely known. Gabapentin structurally resembles the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). It is possible that this similarity is responsible for gabapentin's mechanism of action. In animal models used for testing the anticonvulsant and analgesic activity of drugs, gabapentin prevents seizures and reduces pain-related responses.

Dosage
Available tablet sizes: 100 mg, 300 mg, 400 mg, 600 mg, 800 mg
Available capsule sizes: 300 mg, 400 mg

Gabapentin may be taken with or without food. The recommended dose for treating postherpetic neuralgia is 1800 mg daily in 3 divided doses. The initial dose of 300 mg daily is increased over several days to the recommended daily dose.

Seizures are treated with 900-1800 mg daily, in 3 divided doses. Withdrawal of treatment should occur slowly over a week.

Antiepileptic drugs should not be abruptly discontinued because of the possibility of increasing seizure frequency. Speak with doctor before withdrawing from medication.

This drug works best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore it is best to take gabapentin at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Do not take this medication more often or increase your dose without consulting your doctor. Your condition will not improve any faster and the risk of serious side effects may be increased.

  Precautions
Consult a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of suicidality or kidney disease.

Sudden and unexplained deaths have been reported in people being treated with Neurontin.

Gabapentin use in pediatric patients with epilepsy 3–12 years of age is associated with the occurrence of central nervous system related adverse events: emotional liability, hostility, thought disorder, hyperkinesias. In pediatric use safety and effectiveness of Neurontin (gabapentin) in the management of postherpetic neuralgia in pediatric patients have not been established.

This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages as they may worsen these effects. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially swollen arms/legs or loss of coordination.

This drug is known to be substantially excreted by the kidney, and the risk of toxic reactions to this drug may be greater in patients with impaired renal function.

Consult a doctor before taking Neurontin if you are also taking phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid, phenobarbital, naproxen, hydrocodone, morphine, cimetidine, ethinyl estradiol, norethindrone, antacids, or probenecid.
