Indications Trileptal is used to treat seizures resulting from epilepsy. How It Works Trileptal is an anticonvulsant. The exact mechanism of action by which Trileptal works is the human body not known, but it is theorized that the chemical oxcarbazepine has the effect of creating a blockage in voltage-sensitive sodium channels through which bio-electrical signals are transmitted. It is believed that this stabilizes the hyperexcited neural members. This, in turn, inhibits the repetitive firing of neurons which trigger seizures. Dosage Tablets (150 mg, 300 mg, 600 mg) The recommended initial dose of Trileptal is typically 600 mg daily, split into two 300 mg doses. Thereafter, dosage may be increased by 600 mg per week to achieve a target dosage of 1200 mg in treatments where the drugs is used in conjunction with other, similar medication. In cases where it is desirable to use Trileptal as the sole treatment, a target dosage of 2400 mg is usual. In all cases, the total daily dosage should be divided into two doses per day. Adverse/Side Effects It is not uncommon for Trileptal to cause the following minor side effects: reduced sodium levels and potentially serious electrolyte imbalance . If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional. Infrequent side effects may include nausea, weakness, vomiting, thirst, loss of appetite, headache, confusion, hallucinations, muscle pain or weakness, increased or more severe seizures. Rare side effects may also include suicidal behavior or ideation. If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
