Zonegran, zonisamide
The active substance in Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide) hard capsules is zonisamide.
Zonegran 25 mg hard capsules contain 25 mg of zonisamide.
Zonegran 50 mg hard capsules contain 50 mg zonisamide.
Zonegran 100 mg hard capsules contain 100 mg zonisamide.
- The other ingredients that are present in the capsule are: microcrystalline cellulose, hydrogenated vegetable oil and sodium laurilsulfate.
- The capsule shell contains: gelatin, titanium dioxide (E171), shellac, propylene glycol, potassium hydroxide, black iron oxide (E172). Additionally the 100 mg. capsule shell contains sunset yellow FCF (E110) and allura red (E129).
1. What Zzonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide) Is And What It Is Used For
- Zonegran 25 mg hard capsules have a white opaque body and a white opaque cap and are printed with a logo and "ZONEGRAN 25" in black.
- Zonegran 50 mg hard capsules have a white opaque body and a grey opaque cap and are printed with a logo and "ZONEGRAN 50" in black.
- Zonegran 100 mg hard capsules have a white opaque body and a red opaque cap and are printed with a logo and "ZONEGRAN 100" in black.
Zonegran hard capsules contain zonisamide, which is an antiepileptic medicine. Zonegran is used to treat patients who are already taking other antiepileptic medicines with partial seizures, with or without secondary generalisation.
Zonegran capsules are packaged in blister packs supplied in boxes containing:
- 25 mg: 14, 28, 56 and 84 capsules
- 50 mg: 14, 28, 56 and 84 capsules
- 100 mg: 28, 56, 84, 98 and 196 capsules.
Not all pack sizes may be available.
2. Before Taking Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide)
Do not take Zonegran:
- If you are hypersensitive (allergic) to zonisamide or to any of the other ingredients of Zonegran.
- If you are pregnant, think that you may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Take special care with Zonegran:
- If you are younger than 18 years old because Zonegran is not recommended for you.
- If you are of childbearing age you must use adequate contraception while taking Zonegran and for one month after discontinuation.
- If you are elderly, as there are limited data about the use of Zonegran in this age group and your dose of Zonegran may need adjusting.
- If you suffer from liver problems there is limited data about the use of Zonegran in this group so your dose of Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide) may need adjusting or the dose may be increased more slowly.
- If you suffer from kidney problems, as there is limited data about the use of Zonegran in this group, your dose of Zonegran may need adjusting or the dose may be increased more slowly.
- If you get a sudden pain in your back or stomach, have pain urinating or notice blood in your urine this may be a sign of kidney stones. Reduce the risk of kidney stones by drinking plenty of water. If you have previously suffered from kidney stones please inform your doctor.
- If it is particularly hot. Reduce the risk of overheating by drinking plenty of water and keeping cool.
- If you have an unexplained skin rash contact your doctor immediately as this could develop into a more severe skin rash.
- If you have lost a lot of weight tell your doctor as this may need to be monitored.
- If you feel unusually tired or have had a sore throat for some days or find that you bruise more easily. Contact your doctor as this may mean you have a blood disorder.
- If you have pain in your muscles or a feeling of weakness. Inform your doctor.
- When Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide) treatment is to be discontinued, follow your doctor's instructions and withdraw it gradually.
If any of these applies to you at any time in the past, tell your doctor before you take Zonegran.
Pregnancy
Tell your doctor immediately if you might be, or are pregnant, or are planning to get pregnant. You must only take Zonegran during your pregnancy if your doctor tells you to.
Breastfeeding
Do not breastfeed whilst taking, or for one month after stopping Zonegran.
Driving and using machines
Zonegran may affect your concentration, ability to react/respond, and may make you feel sleepy, particularly at the beginning of your treatment or after your dose is increased. Be especially careful while driving or operating machinery, if Zonegran affects you in this way.
Important information about some of the ingredients of Zonegran
Zonegran 100 mg hard capsules contain a yellow color called sunset yellow FCF (E110), which may cause allergic reactions.
Taking other medicines
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, or have recently taken, any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. The effect of zonisamide can be reduced by other medicines you are taking. This may require an adjustment of your dose of Zonegran.
3. How To Take Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide)
Always take Zonegran exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The usual adult dose is 50 mg daily taken in two equal doses of 25 mg. This may be increased by up to 100 mg at intervals of one to two weeks up to a daily dose between 300 mg and 500 mg. Some people may respond to lower doses. The dose may be increased more slowly if you experience unwanted effects or if you suffer from kidney problems.
Zonegran capsules must be swallowed whole with water. Do not chew the capsules. Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide) must be taken once or twice daily, as instructed by your doctor. If you take Zonegran twice a day, take half the daily dose in the morning and half in the evening. Zonegran can be taken with or without food.
If you feel that the effect of Zonegran is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Zonegran is meant to be taken as a long term medicine. Do not reduce your dose or stop your medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
If you take more Zonegran than you should
If you have taken more Zonegran than you should, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately or go to your nearest hospital taking your medicine with you. You may become sleepy and could lose consciousness. Do not try to drive.
If you forget to take Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide)
If you forget to take a dose, take the next dose when it is due. Do not take double the dose to make up for the forgotten dose.
Effects when you stop taking Zonegran
If your doctor advises you to stop taking Zonegran your dose will be reduced gradually to lower the risk of more seizures.
4. Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, Zonegran can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The most common side effects of Zonegran are mild. They are more frequent during the first month of treatment and usually decrease with continued treatment. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following and if they are bothersome: drowsiness, loss of appetite, loss of weight, dizziness, loss of concentration, nausea, agitation or irritability, double vision, depression, poor muscle coordination, confusion, poor memory, stomach pains, diarrhea (loose stools), speech abnormalities, skin rashes, fever and allergic reactions.
The uncommon side effects of Zonegran are: strange or unusual thoughts, vomiting, gall bladder inflammation or gallstones, kidney stones or urinary stones, pneumonia and urinary tract infections, low blood potassium levels and convulsions / seizures.
Very rare side effects reported with the use of Zonegran are:
Blood disorders, swollen glands, hallucinations, memory loss, insomnia, thoughts of suicide, coma, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (inability to move, sweating, fever, incontinence), breathing disorders, difficulty breathing, inflammation of the lungs, inflammation of the pancreas, liver problems, itching, severe rashes, decreased sweating and overheating, pain in your muscles, weakness in your muscles, kidney failure or other kidney problems.
If you notice any of these side effects, please tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

5. Storing Zonegran (Excegran, Zonisamide)
Keep Zonegran out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not store above 30°C.
Do not use Zonegran after the expiry date stated on the blister and the carton.
All medications must be kept out of the reach and sight of children.
