Betagan, levobunolol

Chemical Names
levobunolol

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: levobunolol
Non-Active Ingredients: polyvinyl alcohol 1.4%; edetate disodium; sodium metabisulfite; sodium phosphate, dibasic; potassium phosphate, monobasic; sodium chloride; hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH; and purified water.

Indications
Betagan is indicated in the treatment of glaucoma.

How It Works
Levobunolol is a beta-blocker, a member of a chemical group usually used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It expands the blood vessels in the targeted area – in the case of Betagan, the eyeball – and lowers intraocular pressure by doing so. Since glaucoma is caused by heightened pressure of the anterior segment of the eye, Betagan can provide immediate relief from glaucoma.

Dosage
Available eye drop formulations: 0.5%

The recommended starting dosage is one to two drops of 0.5% solution in each eye once daily. Once accustomed to this, dosage can be increased at a doctor’s discretion to one to two drops in each eye twice daily.

Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Betagan if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of diabetes, hypertension, hypotension, thyroid problems, heart disease, or lung disease. Tell your doctor if you are having surgery at any point during your time taking Betagan.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Betagan if you are taking digoxin, reserpine, insulin, antidiabetics, blood pressure medications (especially beta blockers or calcium channel blockers), chlorpromazine, haloperidol, mesoridazine, thioridazine, or other eye drop medications.

Adverse/Side Effects
Tell your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects: eye stinging or burning, eye discomfort, eye redness, eye itchiness, swollen eyelids, and decreased vision.

Stop using Betagan if you experience any of the following adverse reactions: difficulty breathing, wheezing, slowed heartbeat, faintness, swelling of the feet and legs, or sudden weight gain.

Overdose
No data are available regarding overdosage in humans. Should accidental ocular overdosage occur, flush eye(s) with water or normal saline. If accidentally ingested, efforts to decrease further absorption may be appropriate (gastric lavage). The most common signs and symptoms to be expected with overdosage with administration of a systemic beta-adrenergic blocking agent are symptomatic bradycardia, hypotension, bronchospasm, and acute cardiac failure. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
