Betoptic, betaxololChemical Names
betaxolol
Ingredients
Active ingredients: betaxolol
Non-active ingredients: Active: I: Mannitol, Poly(Styrene-Divinyl Benzene) sulfonic acid, Carbomer 934P, edetate disodium, hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide (to adjust pH) and purified water.
Indications
Betoptic is used to treat chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
How It Works
When instilled in the eye, Betoptic Ophthalmic Suspension 0.25% has the action of reducing elevated intraocular pressure, whether or not accompanied by glaucoma. Betaxolol is a beta-blocker that has a vasodilatory effect, relaxing blood channels in the eye.
Dosage
Available ophthamalmic suspension concentrations: 0.25% 5ml
Instill one drop of the 0.25% suspension in the affected eye(s) twice daily. It may be used alone or in combination with other intraocular pressure lowering medications.
Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Betoptic if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of heart failure, heart block, myasthenia gravis, thyroid troubles, asthma, pulmonary problems, atrophy, severe anaphylactic reaction, angle-closure glaucoma, cerebrovascular insufficiency, cardiogenic shock, sinus bradycardia, or bronchospasm.
Bacterial keratitis may occur with use of multiple dose containers of topical ophthalmic products when these containers are inadvertently contaminated by patients. Use caution.
The same adverse reactions found with systemic administration of beta-adrenergic receptor inhibitors may occur with ophthalmic administration. For example, severe respiratory reactions and cardiac reactions, including death due to bronchospasm in patients with asthma, and death due to cardiac failure, have been reported with topical application of beta-adrenergic receptor inhibitors.
