Cyclogyl, cyclopentolateChemical Namescyclopentolate Ingredients Cyclopentolate hydrochloride 10 mg per mL preserved with benzalkonium chloride 0,01%. Indications Cyclogyl is used to dilate the eye in preparation for surgery or examination. It has also been know to be effective for Posterior synechiae and Uveitis. How It Works Cyclopentolate is an anticholinergic agent that relaxes the muscle controlling the iris and the ciliary muscles. Cyclopentolate is used to dilate (enlarge) the pupil. It is used before eye examinations such as cycloplegic refraction or ophthalmoscopy. When applied as drops, it causes a rapid paralysis of the eye (opening up the iris), usually for the purpose of examination or surgery. The drops reach full effect in 15 to 60 minutes. Eye returns to normal usually within 24 hours. Dosage Cyclogyl comes in easy-eye drop bottles of 5ml. Directions: to relax the eye causing mydriasis and cycloplegia (usually for diagnostic purposes), in adults administer 1 drop per eye, followed by a second drop 5 minutes later. Drops will take approximately 30-40 minutes to take full effect. Precautions Cyclogyl is not an anethsthetic. Consult a doctor before taking Cyclogyl if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have ever previously experienced an allergic reactions to eye drops or other eye medications. Consult with a doctor if you have any sort of eye damage or infection, Cyclogyl should not be used in patients with closed-angle glaucoma, or patients with a narrow angle between the iris and the cornea. Consult a doctor if you have Down syndrome or a nervous system disorder or if you have trouble urinating or a blockage of your bladder Cyclogyl will make your pupils unusually large and you will have blurred vision, especially up-close. Make sure your vision is clear before you drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous without proper sight. Your eyes will be more sensitive to light than normal. Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet (UV) light during the day to protect your eyes from sunlight and other bright lights. Cyclogyl may be harmful if swallowed. Do not ingest Cyclogyl orally, if you or someone you know has taken Cyclogyl by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor about any prescription or nonprescription medication you may use, especially: carbachol, pilocarpine, phthalmic cholinesterase inhibitors or other eye medications because Cyclogyl can reduce their effectiveness. If you are taking any antibiotics or other drugs make sure to tell your doctor. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Adverse/Side Effects As with all medications this drug may cause side effects. If any of these common side effects persist or become bothersome contact your doctor: Blurred vision, redness, burning sensation, irritation of the eye, or sensitivity to sunlight. If any of these more severe side effects occur while using Cyclogyl contact a physician immediately: Severe allergic reactions: rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; changes in behavior (especially in children), including clumsiness, confusion, difficulty walking, disorientation, hallucinations, hyperactivity, restlessness, seizures, or slurred speech. Other side effects to note: Cyclogyl may increase intraocular pressure, photophobia, irritation, hyperemia, conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, punctate keratitis, and synechiae. It may decrease secretions in the pharynx, bronchi, and nasal passages and is some rare cases may cause hallucinations, hyperactivity, disorientation, and failure to recognize people. Overdose Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, dry mouth, behavioral disturbances, uncoordinated movement or drowsiness. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
