Isopto Tears, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Chemical Names
hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Ingredients
Active Ingredient: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Indications
Isopto Tears is indicated in the treatment of dry eyes, corneal irritation, keratitis, and other minor eye problems. It should not be used as a sole treatment when an underlying pathogenic cause for keratitis has been discovered.

How It Works
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose promotes corneal wetting by stabilizing and thickening the precorneal tear film and prolonging the tear film breakup time, which is usually shortened in dry eye conditions. It also acts to lubricate and protect the eye.

Dosage
One drop is applied to each eye three or four times a day, or as needed. Remove contact lenses before taking this medication if you have corneal epithelial problems and are taking Isopto Tears every 1 or 2 hours.

Apply eye drops to the affected eye(s) as follows: Wash hands first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye. Shake the eye drops well before using. Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place dropper directly over eye and administer a drop to each eye. Look downward and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medication from draining away from the eye. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse the dropper. Wash hands after use. It is applied 3 or 4 times per day. If you are using another kind of eye drop, wait at least five minutes before applying other medications.
