Indications
Lotemax is indicated in to treat eye swelling caused by surgery, infection, or allergies. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
 
How It Works
Lotemax is a corticosteroid. It prevents the release of the chemicals in the body that cause inflammation.
 
Dosage

Always wash your hands before applying eye drops. The recommended dosage is 1-2 drops of Lotemax ophthalmic solution in the affected eye three times a day. Do not use this medication for longer then 2 weeks. If you don’t notice an improvement after 2 days contact your doctor.
 
To apply tilt your head back slightly and pull down on the lower eyelid. Hold the dropper above the eye with the dropper tip down. Look up and away from the dropper. Squeeze out a drop and close your eye. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for about a minute to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct.

Precautions
Before using loteprednol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Lotemax; or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: a sensitivity to the sun, glaucoma, cataracts (or if you have recently had cataract surgery) or a
herpes infection of your eye. You may need a dose adjustment or may not be able to take Lotemax.
 
If you develop an eye infection, bacterial or fungal infection, eye injury, or have eye surgery, check with your doctor about whether you should continue to use loteprednol.
 
Your vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying this drug. Do not drive, use machinery, or do activities that requires clear vision until you are sure you can see properly.
 
Do not use this medication while wearing contact lenses. This medication can be absorbed by contact lenses. You should wait at least 15 minutes after using Lotemax drops before putting your contact lenses back in.
 
Do not allow the dropper to become contaminated by touching household surfaces, or eyes and hands. If the dropper becomes contaminated it could cause an infection in your eye, which can lead to vision loss or serious eye damage.
Do not use any other eye medication unless your doctor has prescribed it for you. If you use another eye medication, use it at least 10 minutes before or after using loteprednol ophthalmic. Do not use the medications at the same time.
 
Consult a doctor before taking Lotemax if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast feeding as it is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk.
 
Drug Interactions
It is unlikely that Lotemax interacts with other drugs. But before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription, including herbal products you may use. Consult a doctor before taking Lotemax especially if you are wearing contact lenses or are using other types of eye drops.
 
Adverse/Side Effects
Normal side effects include: temporary blurred vision, temporary burning/stinging/ itching/redness of the eye, watery eyes, dry eyes, feeling that something is in your eye, being more sensitive to light, headache or runny nose and sore throat. If any of these effects persist, worsen or become overly bothersome notify your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
 
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
 
Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these rare but serious side effects: signs of a new eye infection such as swelling, redness, irritation, or drainage, problems with your vision or severe pain, burning or stinging when using the eye drops.
 
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention you are experiencing an allergic reaction. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
 
Overdose

If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
 
Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets. Assure that the cap is closed tightly.
