Pilagan, pilocarpineChemical Namepilocarpine Ingredients Active Ingredients: pilocarpine Non-Active Ingredients: benzalkonium chloride, hypromellose 2910, boric acid, sodium citrate, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide, purified water. Indications Pilagan is used to treat ocular hypertension, open-angle glaucoma, acute angle-closure glaucoma, postoperative elevated IOP and miiosis. - How It Works Pilocarpine is a muscarinic receptor agonist. It works by causing muscles in the eye to contract and thereby opening the trabecular meshwork which allows aqueous humor in the eye to escape, reducing pressure. Dosage Eye Drops (2% 5 ml, 4% 5 ml) The recommended initial dose of Pilagan varies for the condition being treated, but 1% doses are recommended for initial treatment because higher concentrations are often not initially tolerated. Open-Angle Glaucoma: 1%, 2% or 4% solution is to be applied in the form of 1 drop three to four time a day. The concentration is determined by the severity of the pressure on the eye. Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma: 1 drop of 1% or 2% to be administered three times over a 30 minute period for initial management of the condition. Postoperative Elevated IOP: 2 drops at 1%, 2% or 4% to be taken 15 to 60 minutes before surgery. Miosis: 1 drop of 1%, 2% 4%. Precautions Pilagan is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Pilagan. Adverse/Side Effects It is not uncommon for Pilagan to cause the following minor side effects: headache and browache. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional. Infrequent side effects may include blurred vision, eye irritation. Rare side effects may also include visual impairment and eye pain. If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
