Timoptic, timololChemical NameTimolol Ingredients Active Ingredients: Timolol Non-Active Ingredients: Monobasic and dibasic sodium phosphate, sodium hydroxide to adjust pH, and water for injection. Benzalkonium chloride 0.01% is added as preservative. Indications Timoptic is used to treat ocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma. How It Works Timoptic is a beta (adrenergic receptor) blocker, which slows down cardiac output in all patients. This in turn reduces ocular pressure in patients with and without glaucoma. While the exact mechanism by which Timoptic and other beta-blockers reduce ocular pressure is not known, it has been speculated that reduced cardiac pressure increases outflow from the eyes themselves. Once accustomed to applications of Timoptic, a patient may experience immediate relief from ocular pressure after one topical administration. Some patients may require multiple doses per day. Dosage Available only as a solution, Timoptic is produced in both .25 and .5 concentrations. The usual starting dose is two drops of a .25 solution daily. A patient may take up to four weeks to stabilize at this dose, after which stronger concentrations and more or less frequent dosing may be applied. Desired effect should be reduction of interocular pressure to comfortable levels. Patients should take a minimum dose to achieve these effects. Extra dosages may not further relieve pressure. Take care to wash your hands and remove any contact lenses before applying Timoptic. Avoid contamination of the eye dropper. Precautions Timoptic is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Timoptic. Do not let the Timoptic dropper touch any surface. It may become contaminated and could cause eye infections. Always wash your hands before using Timoptic. People with chronic bronchitis should not use beta-blockers such as Timoptic. Timoptic and other beta-blockers can cause cardiac arrest in both healthy and at risk patients.
