Proscar, finasterideChemical NamesFinasteride Ingredients Active ingredients: finasteride Non-active ingredients: hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium, FD&C Blue 2 aluminum lake and yellow iron oxide. Indications Your doctor may have prescribed Proscar, Finasteride for you because you have a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Proscar will help reduce the risk of developing a sudden inability to pass urine (acute urinary retention) and the need for surgery. Proscar is also prescribed for treatment of hair loss. How It Works Finasteride inhibits the enzyme necessary for the conversion of testosterone to DHT in the prostate. Therefore, administration of finasteride lowers blood and tissue DHT levels and helps reduce the size of the prostate gland. Lowering DHT levels also increases revitalization of hair follicles in some men. Dosage Available oral tablet sizes: 1 mg, 5 mg For the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the recommended dosage is 5 mg orally, once a day. For the treatment of alopecia (baldness) the recommended dose is 1 mg per day. Take Proscar at the same time each day with a glass of water. Proscar shrinks the prostate gland slowly. Therefore, you may need to take Proscar for 6 months or longer to see whether it helps you. If it does help your symptoms, you may need to take Proscar every day. Continue taking Proscar for as long as your doctor prescribes. If you stop taking the medicine the prostate gland is likely to grow again. Consult a doctor before taking Proscar if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of liver disease, prostate cancer, or urinary tract disease. If you take this medicine after the expiry date has passed, it may not work. If the active ingredient in Proscar is absorbed after swallowing the tablet or through the skin by a woman who is pregnant with a male baby, it may cause the male baby to be born with abnormalities of the sex organs. Proscar tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided the tablets are not broken or crushed. If a pregnant woman swallows Proscar or handles broken tablets, her doctor must be consulted immediately. Drug Interactions No drug interactions of clinical importance have been identified. Finasteride does not appear to affect the cytochrome P450-linked drug-metabolizing enzyme system. Compounds that have been tested in man include antipyrine, digoxin, propranolol, theophylline, and warfarin and no clinically meaningful interactions were found. Adverse/Side Effects Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following: breast swelling or tenderness, skin rash, itchiness, hives or nettlerash (pinkish, itchy swellings on the skin), testicle pain., impotence (inability to have an erection), less desire for sex, changes or problems with ejaculation, such as decreased amount of semen released during sex (this decrease does not appear to interfere with normal sexual function). Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Proscar may include skin rash or swelling of the lips or face. Overdose Symptoms of Proscar overdose are unknown. If you suspect overdose, contact your local emergency room immediately. Storage Instructions No special storage requirements are necessary. This medication must not be used after the expiry date indicated on the carton. |
