Aggrenox, asprin and dipyridamole extended releaseChemical NamesAspirin, extended-release dipyridamole Ingredients Active Ingredients: aspirin, extended-release dipyridamole Non-Active Ingredients: acacia, aluminum stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, dimethicone, hypromellose, hypromellose phthalate, lactose monohydrate, methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, stearic acid, sucrose, talc, tartaric acid, titanium dioxide and triacetin. Each capsule shell contains gelatin, red iron oxide and yellow iron oxide, titanium dioxide and water. Indications Aggrenox is indicated in the treatment and prevention of stroke, especially in patients who suffer from transient ischemia of the brain or who have suffered an ischemic stroke due to thrombosis. How It Works Aggrenox is a combination medication that contains both aspirin and dipyridamole. Aspirin is a common pain reliever that has an antiplatelet effect, meaning it can prevent blood from clotting. Since strokes are caused by blood clots forming in the blood vessels of the brain, taking aspirin regularly can prevent them from occurring. Dipyridamole is another drug that inhibits thrombus (blood clot) formation. Dosage Available capsule sizes (aspirin/dipyridamole): 25mg/200mg The usual Aggrenox dosage is two daily doses of a single oral capsule – one in the morning, and one at night. It must be swallowed whole, and can be taken with or without food. Elderly or renally-impaired patients should consult a doctor to see if they require a lesser dosage. If unbearable headaches occur, an acceptable alternative dosage is one Aggrenox capsule at bedtime and one low-dose aspirin tablet in the morning. Since headaches as a result of Aggrenox usage are transitory and an occasional side-effect of the acclimatization process, this alternative dosage should be taken for no more than a week. Aggrenox is not interchangeable with the individual components of aspirin and dipyridamole tablets. Consult a doctor before taking Aggrenox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of liver problems, kidney problems, asthma, nasal polyps, rhinitis, blood disorders, low blood pressure, heart problems, alcohol dependence, ulcers, chickenpox, or influenza. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Aggrenox if you are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), blood pressure medication, blood thinners, diuretics, diabetes medications, gout medications, edrophonium, physostigmine, aspirin, adenosine, acetazolamide, phenytoin, valproic acid, methotrexate or any drug that causes drowsiness, such as sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic pain relievers, psychiatric medicines, antiepileptics, muscle relaxants, or antihistamines. Adverse/Side Effects Nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset or drowsiness may occur, especially during the initial stages of an Aggrenox regimen.
