Ingredients
Active Ingredients: dipyridamole
Non-Active Ingredients: Acacia, carnauba wax, corn starch, edible white ink, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, D&C yellow #10 aluminum lake, D&C red #30, helendon aluminum pink lake, sodium benzoate, methylparaben, propylparaben, polyethylene glycol, povidone, sucrose, talc, titanium dioxide, and white wax.

Indications
Persantine is indicated in the treatment of stroke prevention. It is also indicated as an accompanying drug for post cardiac valve replacement and other heart procedures. It usually accompanies a coumarin anticoagulant such as Warfin.

How It Works
Dipyridamole is Dipyridamole keeps the platelets in your blood from coagulating (clotting) to prevent blood clots from forming on or around an artificial heart valve. Dipyridamole is often taken together with other medications to prevent blood clots and is often prescribed after heart valve replacement surgery.

Dosage
Tablets (25 mg, 100 mg)

Take this medication orally. The recommended dose is 75-100 mg four times daily, usually accompanied by another blood thinner such as warfarin.

Precautions
You should not use this medication if you are allergic to dipyridamole or similar medicines. Before taking Persantine, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, low blood pressure, coronary artery disease, angina (chest pain), or if you have recently had a heart attack.

Dipyridamole is often taken together with other medications, usually other blood thinners such as Warfin (Coumadin), to prevent blood clots. To best treat your condition, use all of your medications as directed by your doctor. There are many drugs that can interact with blood thinners, so make sure to consult each drugs’ precautions and drug interactions.

It is not suspected that this medication can harm an unborn baby. Before taking Dipyridamole, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Dipyridamole passes into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medication to anyone under 12 years old.

This drug may make you drowsy or dizzy. Make sure you can safely drive, use machinery, or preform activities that requires alertness. Do not consumer too many alcoholic beverages.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.


Drug Interactions
Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor first. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products and vitamins that you may use.

While you are taking dipyridamole, do not take aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) without your doctor's advice. NSAIDs include Motrin, Advil (ibuprofen), Aleve, Naprosyn (naproxen), Voltaren (diclofenac),  Dolobid (diflunisal),  Lodine (etodolac),  Ansaid (flurbiprofen),  Indocin (indomethacin), Orudis (ketoprofen), Toradol (ketorolac), Ponstel (mefenamic acid),  Mobic (meloxicam), Relafen nabumetone),  Feldene (piroxicam) and others.

If you are taking any other medication make sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist; especially about: adenosine, or other "blood thinners" (e.g., heparin, enoxaparin, dalteparin, ardeparin, fondaparinux, tinzaparin), other medicines that affect platelets (e.g., ticlopidine, abciximab, eptifibatide, lepirudin), neostigmine, pyridostigmine, valproic acid, or aspirin. If you are taking maintenance doses of aspirin for a heart condition consult with your doctor immediately.

Check the labels on all your medicines (cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may contain ingredients that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your pharmacist about using those products safely.

Adverse/Side Effects
Dizziness, stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, and flushing may occur, usually as your body first begins to get used to the medication. These are minor side effects and should clear themselves up. If these effects worsen, or don’t go away on their own, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit is greater than the risk of side effects. Most people using Persantine do not experience serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare and very serious side effects occur: weakness, fainting, stomach pain, pounding/rapid heartbeat, yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine, unusual bleeding/bruising.
Seek medical attention as soon as possible if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: chest pain, confusion, severe headache, slurred speech, vision changes, weakness on one side of the body.

A very serious allergic reaction does not usually happen. However get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. There may be other side effects than those listed here, if experiencing an adverse reaction to this drug contact your doctor immediately.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include sweating, warmth or tingly feeling under your skin, dizziness, weakness, restlessness, fast heart rate, feeling light-headed, or fainting. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
