Ticlid, ticlopidine

Chemical Name
Ticlopidine

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: ticlopidine

Non-Active Ingredients: Citric acid, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, starch and stearic acid, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, polyethylene glycol and titanium dioxide.

 Indications
Ticlid is used to treat patients who have had or may be at risk of Thrombotic stroke, or strokes caused by blood clots in arteries leading to the brain. Ticlid is also used to reduce the risk of stent thrombosis in patients undergoing stent implants.

How It Works
Thrombotic strokes are caused by blood clots that become detached from an artery wall and travel to the brain, stopping or limiting blood flow. This reduced bloody supply then causes a fatal or non-fatal stroke. Ticlid works by thinning the patient's blood, thereby reducing chances of clotting.

Application of Ticlid is similar in stent patients. Stents are tiny supports used to hold open the arteries of patients at risk of heart attack. Because there is an increased risk of blood clots forming around these stents, Ticlid is sometimes prescribed to reduce the chance of stroke.  In both cases Aspirin may be taken along with Ticlid.

Dosage
Tablets are available in 250 mg pills printed with “Ticlid” in blue.
The recommended initial dose of Ticlid is 250 mg daily for stroke and stent patients. Stent patients should also take Ticlid with Aspirin.

Precautions
Ticlid is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Ticlid. Or have a hematopoietic  or hemostatic disorder. Ticlid may reduce white blood cell or platelet count and may cause hemophilia. White blood cell count usually rises 1-3 weeks after discontinuing use of Ticlid.

This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Ticlid, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
