Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Famciclovir

Non-Active Ingredients:
Tablets: hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycols, sodium starch glycolate and titanium dioxide.

Indications
Famvir is used to treat viral infections caused by the herpes virus. It is also effective against illnesses caused by the herpes virus including genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chicken pox.

How It Works
Famvir is an antiviral drug that slows the growth and spread of herpes so that the body can fight off the viral infection. Famvir can not cure the herpes virus, but it can lessen the symptoms of the infection.

Dosage
Tablets (250 mg, 500 mg)
Cold sores
The recommended dosage to treat a cold sore outbreak is 1500 mg as a single dose administered at the first sign of symptoms of a cold sore (tingling, itching, burning, pain, or appearance of lesion).

Genital herpes
Recurrent outbreaks:
The recommended dosage to treat recurrent episodes of genital herpes is 1000 mg twice daily for 1 day administered at the first sign of symptoms of an outbreak, (tingling, itching, burning, pain, or appearance of lesion).

Suppressive therapy:
 The recommended dosage to treat chronic herpes outbreaks  and to initiate suppressive therapy of genital herpes, is 250 mg twice daily.

Herpes zoster (shingles):
The recommended dosage to treat herpes zoster is 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. Therapy should be initiated when herpes zoster is diagnosed.

Dosing Recommendation in HIV-Infected Adult Patients:
Recurrent cold sores or genital herpes: The recommended dosage for the treatment of recurrent cold sores or genital herpes in HIV infected patients is 500 mg twice daily for 7 days.

Precautions
Famvir is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to famciclovir or any other components of the drug. Make sure your doctor knows your medical history, especially if you have any history of kidney disease, liver disease, HIV/AIDS, a weak immune system, galactose intolerance, severe lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Famvir passes into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby, you should not breast feed while on this medication. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

Famciclovir does not prevent the spread of genital herpes, to prevent the spread of genital herpes always practice safe sexual practices.

Famvir may cause drowsiness or dizziness or may impair your thinking and cloud your mind. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform dangerous tasks until you know how you react.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Famvir, if you are taking: Probenecid. These two drugs may affect the absorption rate in the body. Consult your doctor or pharmacist as a dosage adjustment may be necessary.

Before using this Famvir, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Famvir works or may cause other unforeseen complications.

Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that Famvir may cause some of the following minor side effects: headache, nausea, and/or diarrhea. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.

If you are experiencing any of the following severe side effects you should contact your doctor immediately. Severe side effects include: mental/mood changes (such as confusion, slowed thinking, agitation, or hallucinations), dizziness, or drowsiness.

Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
