Zovirax, acyclovirChemical NamesAcyclovir Ingredients Active Ingredients: acyclovir Non-Active Ingredients: Tablets: FD&C Blue No. 2, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and sodium starch glycolate. Cream: cetostearyl alcohol, mineral oil, poloxamer 407, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, water, and white petrolatum. Indications Zovirax is indicated in the treatment of herpes simplex, herpes zoster (shingles), and Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis, also known as “shingles”). How It Works Acyclovir is an antiviral antibiotic that acts as an inhibitor of viral DNA polymerase. Since its affinity for viral polymerase is approximately 100 times greater than its affinity for cellular (read: human) polymerase, it leaves the human body unscathed while destroying viral intruders. Dosage Available tablet sizes: 200 mg, 400 mg, 800 mg Available cream formulations: 5% Available ointment preparations: 3% The usual dosage of Zovirax tablets for herpes simplex is 200 mg taken 5 times daily and spaced evenly apart. This dosage should last for 10 days. If the herpes is recurrent, the usual adult dose is 400 milligrams (two 200 milligram tablets) 2 times daily for up to 12 months. For acute treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), 800 mg should be taken orally every 4 hours (5 times daily, approximately) for 7 to 10 days. For chicken pox in children, a standard dosage is 20mg/kg taken orally, 4 times daily for 5 days. Children over 40 kg should receive the proper adult dosage. Zovirax cream and Zovirax ointment should be applied 5 times per day for 4 days. Therapy should be initiated as early as possible following onset of signs and symptoms (i.e., during the prodrome or when lesions appear). For best results, apply the cream at the first sign of a cold sore (such as tingle, redness, bump, or itch). Wash your hands before using Zovirax cream and apply a layer to clean, dry skin. Cover only the cold sore or area of tingling. Rub in the cream until it disappears. Wash your hands with soap and water after application. Consult a doctor before taking Zovirax if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of impaired kidney function. Elderly patients require an altered dosage due to higher blood concentrations of Zovirax. When administering Zovirax cream, take care to avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and inside of the mouth. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Zovirax if you are taking phenytoin, valproic acid, probenecid, and theophylline.
