How It Works
Lamivudine, in combination with Zidovudine at various ratios, exhibited synergistic antiretroviral activity.
Dosage
Tablets (150 mg, 300 mg)
The recommended initial dose of Combivir for an adult and adolescents weighing greater than or equal to 30 kg is one pill, twice daily.
Pediatric patients
The recommended oral dosage of Combivir tablets who are greater or equal to 30 kg and for whom a solid oral dosage form is appropriated is one tablet administered twice daily.
Precautions
Combivir is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Combivir.
Lactic acidosis and hepatomegaly with steatosis, including some seriously fatal cases has been reported with use of these drugs or in combination. A majority of these cases have been in women. Obesity and prolonged use of these drugs might be factors, therefore careful observation is important while taking Combivir.
Myopathy, problems with muscle fibers have occurred when taking this medication.
Patients with co-infection with hepatitis B have aseen an excerbation in their condition when taking Combivir.
Patients on Combivir have experienced exacerbations of anemia.
Fat redistribution has been observed in patients receiving antiretroviral therapy. Please be aware of any changes in body type and talk to your doctor.
Frequent blood counts are strongly recommended in patients with advanced HIV-1 disease who are treated with Combivir.
Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome , in which the immune system begins to recover, but then responds to infection with an inflammatory response which paradoxically makes symptoms worse has been experienced in people taking Combivir.
Patients must be monitored for several months after stopping treatment.
This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Combivir, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Combivir passes into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to Lamivudine and Zidovudine or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Combivir.
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Combivir, if you are taking Zalcitabine, Stavudine, Doxorubicin, Ganciclovir, Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole
Before using this Combivir, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Combivir works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that Combivir causes the following minor side effects: headache, malaise, fatigue, dizziness, fever, chills, digestive, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional.
Infrequent side effects: Hematologic toxicity, including neutropenia anemia, lactic actosis, pancreatitis, Depressive disorders, Insomnia & other sleep disorders, skin rashes, Musculoskeletal pain, alopecia, allergies, abnormal breathing, wheezing, muscle weakness, cardiac disease, oral muscosal pigmentation, stomatitis, inflammation of blood vessels, anemia.
If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
