Chemical Name

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Lamivudine

Non-Active Ingredients: black iron oxide, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide.

Oral solution
Non- Active Ingredients: rtificial strawberry and banana flavors, citric acid (anhydrous), methylparaben, propylene glycol, propylparaben, sodium citrate (dihydrate), and sucrose (200 mg).

Indications
Epivir is a nucleoside analogue indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus infection. Limitation of use: The dosage of this product is for HIV-1 and not for HBV.

How It Works
Lamivudine is an analogue of cytidine. It can inhibit both types (1 and 2) of HIV reverse transcriptase and also the reverse transcriptase of hepatitis B.

Tablets (100 mg, 150 mg, 300 mg)

Adults and Adolescents over 16 years of age:
The recommended oral dose of Epivir in HIV-1-infected adults and adolescents older than 16 years of age is 300 mg daily, administered as either 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg once daily, in combination with other antiretroviral agents. Pediatric Patients:
The recommended oral dose of Epivir Oral Solution in HIV-1-infected pediatric patients 3 months to 16 years of age is 4 mg/kg twice daily (up to a maximum of 150 mg twice a day).

Precautions
Epivir is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Epivir , and in patients that have had pancreatitis in the past, liver disease, liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatitis, kidney disease, kidney failure.

If you have a preexisting kidney disease speak with a health care provider, you will need to be monitored by a physician.

This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Epivir, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Epivir passes into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to Lamivudine or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Epivir.

In some cases stopping to take Epivir can actually worsen hepatitis B infection.
When you are withdrawing from the medication you should be monitored at all times.

This medication is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Always practice safe sex regardless of whether or not you are taking medication. Take Epivir exactly as prescribed.

Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that Epivir causes the following minor side effects: Headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, trouble sleeping, mental/mood changes (such as depression), tingling/numbness of hands or feet, muscle weakness, stomach/back pain with nausea and pancreatitis. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.

Infrequent side effects: mental/mood changes, depression, tingling/numbness of hands or feet, muscle weakness, stomach/back pain, nausea, pancreatitis.

Rare side effects: Changes in body fat (such as increased fat in the upper back and stomach areas, decreased fat in the arms and leg. Signs of anemia include easy bleeding, bruising, and pale blue skin.

If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.

Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage Instructions
Store 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F), away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
