Retrovir, zidovudineChemical NameZidovudine Ingredients Active Ingredients: zidovudine Non-Active Ingredients: Tablets: hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide. Capsules: corn starch, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium starch glycolate. The 100-mg empty hard gelatin capsule, printed with edible black ink, consists of black iron oxide, dimethylpolysiloxane, gelatin, pharmaceutical shellac, soya lecithin, and titanium dioxide. Syrup: sodium benzoate 0.2% (added as a preservative), citric acid, flavors, glycerin, and liquid sucrose. Sodium hydroxide may be added to adjust pH. Indications Retrovir is used to treat of Maternal-Fetal HIV-1 Transmission. Retrovir is generally used in three phases. 1. antepartum therapy of HIV-1 infected mothers 2. intrapartum therapy of HIV-1 infected mothers 3.post-partum therapy of HIV-1 How It Works Zidovudine is an antiviral agent. It works by inhibiting the types of blood plasma that allow HIV to travel through the body. Dosage Tablets (5 mg, 100 mg, 300 mg) The recommended dose in adults in 600 mg per day. For children under 30lbs, the dose is determined by weight. Children under nine pounds should receive 24 mg per day, children between nine and 30 lbs should receive 18 mg per day. For prevention of maternal HIV transmission the mother should take 100 mg five times a day. Precautions Retrovir is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Retrovir, No major contraindications are known. Patients with bone marrow diseases should use Retrovir sparingly. Retrovir should not be used with other zidovudine-containing Products. Use of Retrovir may result in fat redistribution. This medicine will cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Retrovir, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Women with HIV should not breastfeed their babies. Doing so may result in unwanted HIV transmission. You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to zidovudine or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Retrovir. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Retrovir if you are taking stavudine, nucleoside Analogues Affecting DNA Replication, or Doxorubicin Before using this Retrovir, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Retrovir works or may cause other unforeseen complications. Adverse/Side Effects It is not uncommon for Retrovir to cause the following minor side effects: Fever, nausea, vomiting. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional. Infrequent side effects may include aplastic anemia, dysphagea, and anxiety. If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
