Didanosine is used to treat HIV, which causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Videx should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 min before or 2 hours after eating. Precautions Didanosine can pose a life-threatening risk by causing damage to your liver or pancreas. Call your doctor at once if you experience any of these symptoms: severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, fast heart rate, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, low fever, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Didanosine may also cause a build up of lactic acid in the body. Symptoms include unusual muscle pain and weakness, trouble breathing, fast or uneven heart rate, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and numbness or cold feeling in your arms or legs. Contact your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms, even if they are only mild. Do not take Didanosine without telling your doctor if you are pregnant. Didanosine may be harmful to an unborn baby, and may also be more likely to cause pancreatitis in a pregnant woman. HIV can be passed to a baby if the mother is not properly treated during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Take all of your HIV medicines as directed to control your infection while you are pregnant. This drug can sometimes cause severe (and in some cases, fatal) allergic reactions and problems with the liver and blood acid-base balance (lactic acidosis). If you develop symptoms such as rash, fever, fatigue, difficult or rapid breathing, cough, swelling of the throat, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, drowsiness, muscle aches, stomach/abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, stop using this medication immediately and notify your doctor. Drug Interactions
Coadministration of Didanosine and Allopurinol should be avoided because systemic exposure of Didanosine will be increased, which may induce Didanosine-associated toxicity. Coadministration of Didanosine and Ribavirin is contraindicated because exposures of the active metabolite of Didanosine gets increased. Fatal hepatic failure, as well as peripheral neuropathy, pancreatitis, and symptomatic hyperlactatemia/lactic acidosis has been reported in patients taking these two drugs. HIV/AIDS is usually treated with a variety of different drugs. Some HIV medications or antibiotics should not be taken at the same time as Didanosine because they can affect absorption and the levels medicine in your blood stream, pay particular attention to the following drugs: Cipro (ciprofloxacin) should be taken at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after you take Didanosine. Rescriptor (delavirdine) or Crixivan (indinavir) should be taken at least 1 hour before you take didanosine. Before taking didanosine, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs: allopurinol (Zyloprim); ganciclovir (Cytovene); hydroxyurea (Droxie, Hydrea); methadone (Dolophine, Methadose); ribavirin (Rebetol, Ribasphere, Copegus Virazole); stavudine (Zerit); tenofovir (Viread); antibiotics such as tetracycline (Brodspec, Panmycin, Sumycin), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin), or minocycline (Minocin); or antibiotics such as enoxacin (Penetrex), levofloxacin (Levaquin), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), ofloxacin (Floxin), trovafloxacin (Trovan), or norfloxacin (Noroxin). This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with Didanosine. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. Including vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor. Adverse/Side Effects The most common side effects of Videx include: diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, and rashs. Headache, dizziness, unusual dreams or trouble sleeping may occur. Tell your healthcare provider if you these side effect become overly bothersome or do not not go away. Many people do not have serious side effects from using Videx but other side effects are possible. This medication can cause severe nerve problems in the hands/feet/legs (peripheral neuropathy). Symptoms may include numbness/tingling/pain in the palms of the hand or soles of the feet. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately so that you can be monitored closely. Your doctor may decide to reduce or stop your dose of didanosine. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these rare but very serious side effects: vision problems (blurred vision, difficulty seeing colors). Discuss the risks and benefits of therapy, and how exercise might reduce this side effect, with your doctor. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, extreme tiredness, achiness, stomach pain, swelling, trouble breathing, cough, sore throat.
