Indications CellCept is used to prevent organ rejection after a transplant. It is used after allogenic kidney, heart or liver transplant. It is usually used in conjunction with other drugs such as cyclosporine and corticosteroids, but this combination should be directed by a doctor. How It Works Cellcept is an immunosuppressant. CellCept works by inhibiting the production of monophosphate dehydrogenase which is an enzyme that controls the rate of production guanine monophosphate which, by extension, limits the proliferation of lymphocytes. Precautions CellCept is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in CellCept. This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking CellCept if you are taking acyclovir, antacids with magnesium and aluminum hydroxide, cholestyramine, Sevelamer, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, norfloxacin and metronidazole, ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, or rifampin. It is also important to consult a doctor if you are taking other immunosuppressant drugs. The use of live vaccines should also be avoided and other types of vaccines may be less effective. Before using this CellCept, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how CellCept works or may cause other unforeseen complications. Adverse/Side Effects It is not uncommon for CellCept to cause the following minor side effects: Constipation, nausea, headache, dizziness and diarrhea. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional. Infrequent side effects may include the development of infections because this drug is an immunosuppressant, therefore patients should be on the lookout for persistent sore throat and fever, nights sweats, and flu-like symptoms. Rare side effects may also include unusual tiredness, fast or irregular heartbeat, muscles weakness, or easy bleeding and bruising. If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
