Indications
Imodium is used to treat diarrhea. Loperamide is also used to reduce the amount of stool in people who have an ileostomy (re-routing of the bowel through a surgical opening in the stomach).
How It Works
Loperamide slows the speed of digestion so that the intestines have more time to absorb all the necessary fluids and nutrients from the foods you eat.
Dosage
Tablets (2 mg)
Loperamide is usually taken at the first sign of diarrhea, and again if diarrhea comes back. The first dose of loperamide is usually twice as much as the following doses. Do not take this medication more than 3 times in 24 hours without your doctor's advice.

When taking loperamide you should see your doctor regularly to check your progress. This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to take it. If your symptoms become worse, check with your doctor. You should see improvement in 2 days or if their is no improvement in 10 days consult your doctor.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription, over-the-counter medicine, especially: Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors: Furoxone (furazolidone), Nardil (phenelzine), Matulane (procarbazine), Eldepryl (selegilene), Parnate (tranylcypromine).
If you are taking another medicine containing the active ingredient: Ketoconazole, Fluconazole or Voriconazole which is used to treat fungal infections. you are taking an antibiotic containing the active ingredient Erythromycin, Clarithromycin or Telithromycin. you are taking another medicine containing the active ingredient amiodarone, which is used to treat fast heart rate. Your doctor will advise you whether or not to take Motillum or if you need to adjust the dose or alter your treatment.
Adverse/Side Effects
If you experience any of these very serious side effects consult a doctor immediately: stomach pain or bloating, ongoing or worsening diarrhea, diarrhea that is watery or bloody; or fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash.
If you experience these less common side effects and they persist or become bothersome you may want to contact your doctor: dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling, constipation, mild stomach pain or mild skin rash or itching.
If you notice any other side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Overdose
