PhosLo, calcium acetate

Chemical Names
calcium acetate

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: calcium acetate
Non-Active Ingredients: polyethylene glycol 8000 NF

Indications
PhosLo is indicated in the control of hyperphosphatemia in end stage renal failure. It does not promote aluminum absorption, unlike many other hyperphostphatemia medications.

How It Works
In kidney disease, blood levels of phosphate may rise (called hyperphosphatemia) leading to bone problems, including osteoporosis. Calcium acetate binds phosphate in the diet to lower blood phosphate levels, preventing bone problems from developing as a result of severe kidney disease.

Dosage
Available tablet sizes: 667 mg

PhosLo should always be used with careful medical supervision, and with careful titration. The recommended initial dose of PhosLo for the adult dialysis patient is two 667 mg tablets with each meal. The dosage may be increased gradually to bring the serum phosphate value below 6 mg/dl, as long as hypercalcemia does not develop. Most patients require 3-4 tablets with each meal.

If you realize have missed a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking PhosLo if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have any allergies or other illnesses.

PhosLo should only be taken under close medical supervision. Do not take PhosLo without consulting a doctor, or without having your phosphate levels regularly monitored.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking PhosLo if you are taking any over-the-counter or prescription medicine, especially digitalis, water pills, blood pressure medication, tetracycline antibiotics, antacids, other kidney medications, or calcium or iron supplements.

Adverse/Side Effects
In clinical studies, patients have occasionally experienced nausea. Isolated instances of pruritus (itching) may indicate allergic reactions.

Hypercalcemia may occur during treatment with PhosLo. Mild hypercalcemia may be asymptomatic or manifest itself as constipation, anorexia, nausea and vomiting. More severe hypercalcemia is associated with confusion, delirium, stupor and coma. Mild hypercalcemia is easily controlled by reducing the PhosLo dose or temporarily discontinuing therapy. Severe hypercalcemia can be treated by acute hemodialysis and discontinuing PhosLo therapy.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
