Cafergot, ergotamine tartrate and caffeine

Chemical Name
Ergotamine tartrate and caffeine

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Ergotamine tartrate and caffeine

Non-Active Ingredients: Acacia, calcium carbonate, compressible sugar, confectioner's sugar (sucrose and corn starch), magnesium stearate, methylparaben, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, propylparaben, sodium benzoate, sodium starch glycolate, starch (potato), sucrose, synthetic iron oxide, titanium dioxide and other ingredients.

Indications
Cafergot is used to treat or prevent vascular headaches, to stop migraine headaches, migraine variants, and histaminic cephalalgia.

How It Works
Caffeine is a stimulant that causes a narrowing of blood vessels. Ergotamine is part of a group of drugs called 'ergot alkaloids', which narrow the blood vessels around the brain. Ergotamine also affects the blood flow, which is associated with several types of headaches. Combineing caffeine and ergotamine helps treat a migraine type headache. For migraine headaches, this medication will only treat a headache in progress and will not, and should not, be used to prevent migraines.

Dosage
Tablets (1 mg/100 mg - ergotamine/caffeine)
Adults should take 2 tablets at the start of attack and then 1 additional tablet every 1/2 hour as needed for full relief. Do not take more then 6 tablets per attack and 10 per week.

Precautions
Cafergot is contraindicated in people with a hypersensitivity to caffeine or ergotamine,
obliterative vascular disease, impaired peripheral circulation, coronary heat disease, renal or hepatic insufficiency, sepsis, severe hypertension, and pregnant women.

Speak to a doctor if you have a history of angina (chest pain), heart disease, coronary artery disease, blood circulation problems, history of a heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe kidney or liver disease, or a serious bacterial or fungal infection. For migraine headaches, this medication will only treat a headache in progress and will not, and should not, be used to prevent migraines. Caffeine and ergotamine should not be used to treat common tension headaches or any headache that seems to be different from your usual migraine headaches.
