How It Works
Zolmitriptan causes constriction of the blood vessels and thereby relieves the pain of a migraine headache. While zolmitriptan is very effective in relieving migraine headaches, it does not prevent or reduce the number of headaches if taken prophylactically.

Dosage
Acute Treatment of Migraine Attacks:

Nasal Spray: Inhaler, 5 mg
Administer one dose of Zomig Nasal Spray 5 mg for the treatment of acute migraine. If the headache returns, the dose may be repeated after 2 hours. The effectiveness of a second dose has not been established in placebo-controlled trials. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 10 mg in any 24-hour period.

The Zomig Nasal Spray consists of the following parts:
Protective Cover: it covers the nozzle to protect it; it must be removed before you use nasal spay.
Nozzle: this is the part that you put into your nostril.
Finger-grip: This is the part that you press
Plunger: when you have inserted the nozzle comfortably in your nostril.
Put the nasal spray device into your nostril as far as it feels comfortable. Tilt your head slightly back. Breathe in gently through your nose and at the same time press the plunger with your thumb
.
Tablet: 2.5 mg
A single doses of 1, 2.5 and 5 mg of Zomig Tablets were effective for the acute treatment of migraines in adults. If the headache returns, the dose may be repeated after 2 hours, not to exceed 10 mg within a 24-hour period. Controlled trials have not adequately established the effectiveness of a second dose if the initial dose is ineffective.

Rapid Melt: 5 mg
A single dose of 2.5 mg of Zomig  Tablets was effective for the acute treatment of migraines in adults. If the headache returns, the dose may be repeated after 2 hours, not to exceed 10 mg within a 24-hour period. Controlled trials have not adequately established the effectiveness of a second dose if the initial dose is ineffective.

Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Zomig if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of heart problems, angina, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, blood vessel disorders, cerebral bleeding, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes, menopause, seizures, epilepsy, or liver disease.

Tablets and Rapid Melts:Before taking zolmitriptan, tell your doctor if you are also taking an antidepressant such as citalopram (Celexa), duloxetine (Cymbalta), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), or venlafaxine (Effexor).
