Ingredients
Active Ingredients: residronate

Non-Active Ingredients:
crospovidone, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide. In the 35 mg tablets there is also ferric oxide red, ferric oxide yellow, lactose monohydrate. The 75 mg tablets also contain ferric oxide red. The 150 mg tablets also have FD&C blue #2 aluminum lake.

Indications
Actonel is used to treat postmenopausal and gluccocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, osteoporosis in men and also Paget’s disease.

How It Works
Risedronate is part of a class of drug known as bisphosphonates.
It works to slow bone loss and increase bone mass in order to prevent fractures by inhibiting osteoclasts, the cells which reabsorb bone tissue, from performing their function.

Dosage
Tablets (35 mg, 75 mg, 150 mg)
The recommended initial dose of Actonel will vary depending on the nature of the condition being treated, however most target dosages work out to 150 mg per month taken in various regimen such as 5 mg daily, 35 mg once per week, 75 mg taken on two consecutive days or one 150 mg table per month. This applies to the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

For Paget’s Disease: 30 mg to be taken daily for 2 months.

Precautions
Actonel is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Actonel, or patients who have conditions that prevent them from staying upright for a minimum of 30 minutes after taking the medication, as otherwise it may cause harm to the stomach and esophagus.

Speak to a doctor if you have the following conditions: a vitamin D deficiency, kidney disease, low blood calcium, stomach ulcer or an esophagus ulcer.

This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Actonel, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known if Actonel passes into breast milk and it may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding a baby.

You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to residronate or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Actonel.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Actonel if you are taking mineral supplements, antacids or medicine that contains calcium. It is also important to consult a doctor of you are taking NSAIDs like aspirin.

Before using this Actonel, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Actonel works or may cause other unforeseen complications.

Adverse/Side Effects
