Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Ibandronate sodium
 
Non-Active Ingredients
Tablets: lactose monohydrate, povidone, microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, purified stearic acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, and purified water. The tablet film coating contains hypromellose, titanium dioxide, talc, polyethylene glycol 6000, and purified water.
Injection: sodium chloride, glacial acetic acid, sodium acetate and water.
 
Indications

Boniva tablets and injection are used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in post menopausal women. The injection is indicated for patients who have difficulty sitting up to take the oral medication.
 
How It Works
Ibandronate is in the group of medications called bisphosphonates, which combat osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes bones to get thinner and to break easily. It is a condition that affects women predominantly. The chances of women developing osteoporosis increases after menopause, or if taking corticosteroid medications for long periods. Boniva works by slowing bone loss in order to help maintain strong bones, it also reduces the risk of bones fractures.
 
Dosage
Tablets (Boniva 50 mg, 150 mg)
Injection (Boniva 3mg/3ml)
 
Boniva tablets
The initial recommended dose of Boniva is 150 mg taken once per month. Patients should not eat, or drink anything except water, or take other medications for at least an hour after taking this medication. After taking this medication it is important to remain standing or upright for at least the next hour. This pill can cause damage to the esophagus and stomach.
 
Injection: Patients should take one injection (into a vein over a period of 15-30 seconds) every 3 months. Boniva injections should be administered by a health care professional.

Precautions
Ibandronate sodium is contraindicated in people who are allergic to Boniva or other bisphosphonates (etidronate, pamidronate, alendronate, risedronate), if you have any other allergies, or if you suffer from low levels of calcium in your blood (hypocalcemia). Consult your doctor before taking Boniva, especially if you have a history of: vitamin D deficiency, kidney disease/impairment or if you have an ulcer in your stomach or esophagus.

For at least the first 60 minutes after taking an ibandronate tablet, do not lie down or recline, do not eat or drink anything other than plain water, do not take any other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids

Consult your doctor before taking hydocortisone injections, especially if you have a history of: liver disease (such as cirrhosis), kidney disease, a history of malaria, tuberculosis, a thyroid disorder, diabetes, osteoporosis, a muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis, glaucoma or cataracts, herpes infection of the eyes, stomach ulcers, ulcerative colitis, or diverticulitis, depression or mental illness, congestive heart failure or high blood pressure.
 
If you have been using Ibandronate sodium do not stop use suddenly, talk to your doctor about how to conclude treatment.
 
This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking ibandronate sodium, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Ibandronate sodium may stay in your body for years. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
 
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Boniva, if you are taking: supplemental calcium and vitamin D. After taking Boniva you should not take any other medication, food, vitamin or mineral for at least an hour because any of these things could affect the absorbtion of Boniva.
 
Before using this ibandronate sodium, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how ibandronate sodium works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
 
Adverse/Side Effects
 
Tablets
It is common that Boniva, ibandronate sodium may cause the following minor side effects: back pain, headache, redness or swelling of your eyes, diarrhea, flu symptoms, redness or swelling where the medicine was injected, nausea or upset stomach or pain in your arms or legs. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.
 
Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: chest pain, difficulty or pain when swallowing, pain or burning under the ribs or in the back, new or worsening heartburn, severe joint, bone, or muscle pain or jaw pain, numbness, or swelling.
 
Injection
Some of the common side effects of Boniva (ibandronate sodium) injections are: headache, stomach upset, flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, tiredness, joint/muscle ache), or injection site reactions (redness, swelling). If these side effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
 
Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these unlikely but serious side effects: increased or severe bone/joint/muscle pain, jaw pain, vision changes, or change in the amount of urine.

If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
 
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
