Indications
Xylocaine is used to treat inflammation and to numb the skin in a particular area of the body. Lidocaine cream is used to treat pain, itching, soreness, and discomfort of the skin or mucous membranes due to conditions like eczema, scratches, minor burns, insect bites, and hemorrhoids. Lidocaine gel can be used for the same purposes as the cream but is also indicated for oral use. Recently Xylocaine has also been recommended for use as a treatment for premature ejaculation.
How It Works
Xylocaine prevents inflammation and acts as a local anesthetic (numbing medication). Lidocaine and belongs to the family of medications called topical corticosteroids. Its exact mechanism is unknown. is a local anesthetic of the amino amide type, and lidocain is also a local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug. Lidocaine is used as a cream to relieve itching, burning and pain due to skin inflammation.

Use a damp and clean cotton cloth to wash the affected area before application. Gently rub a small amount of the cream onto the affected area. You should dress the skin in bandages only if your doctor recommends to do so. If using Xylocaine for premature ejaculation use only a thin coat.
Precautions
Xylocaine is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Xylocaine or who have a blood cell disorder called methemoglobinemia. Talk to your doctor about your medical history, especially if you’ve ever had liver disease, a history of allergic reaction to lidocaine or or a personal or family history of methemoglobinemia, or any genetic enzyme deficiency. You may not be able to use Xylocaine or you may require tests or a reduced dosage.
Lidocain should not be used if there are there are signs of infection (oozing, warmth, pain) or tissue damage in the affected area
Do not take too much of this medication, applying too much can lead to excess absorption. Children may be prone to toxicity when taking Xylocaine, especially since they can absorb proportionally larger amounts.
This medicine is not known to cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Xylocaine, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Xylocaine may pass into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
Drug Interactions
Before using this Xylocaine, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Xylocaine works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that Xylocaine causes the following minor side effects: burning, itching, irritation, dryness or redness at the location of application and changes in skin color where cream is applies. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.
Infrequent and possibly serious side effects include: severe burning, stinging, or sensitivity where the medicine is applied, swelling or redness, sudden dizziness or sleepiness after medicine is applied, bruising or purple appearance of the skin, or unusual sensations of temperature.
Other potentially serious but rare side effects include: asthenia, confusion, disorientation, dizziness, headache, hyperesthesia, hypoesthesia, lightheadedness, metallic taste, nausea, nervousness, pain exacerbated, paresthesia, somnolence, taste alteration, vomiting, visual disturbances such as blurred vision, flushing, tinnitus, and tremors.
If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose include uneven heartbeats, seizure (convulsions), coma, slowed breathing, or respiratory failure (breathing stops).
