The soft gelatin capsules are printed with edible red ink Indications Avodart is indicated in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR). How It Works Dutasteride works by blocking the synthesis of the hormone (dihydrotestosterone) which is responsible for causing prostate swelling and growth. Dihydrotestosterone is one of the main androgens, but for reasons not fully known, becomes more common as men age, causing a range of problems from male pattern baldness to prostate enlargement. Dosage Available capsule sizes: 0.5mg Take one caplet daily, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the medication whole, and bear in mind that it may take from three to six months to notice any improvement of symptoms. Precautions Avodart should not be used by women or children. Exercise caution when handling Avodart near pregnant women, as dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin and cause birth defects. Consult a doctor before taking Avodart if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, urinary tract disease or prostate cancer. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Avodart if you are taking ritonavir, nefazodone, or antifungals. While rare, the most common side effects include sexual problems such as impotence, decreased ejaculate levels, decreased interest in having sex. Often, these disappear as the body adjusts to the presence of Avodart. Possible symptoms of allergic reaction include tightness of the chest, difficulty breathing, swollen face or facial features, and urticaria or a lumpy skin rash. If you think you are allergic to Avodart, consult a doctor before discontinuing its usage. Warnings Using Avodart may affect the results of the blood test used to detect prostate cancer. Inform your doctor before taking this test if you are using Avodart. Overdose Symptoms of Avodart overdose are not known. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Storage Instructions Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets. Avodart capsules may crack and leak when stored at high temperatures – if this happens, do not use them, and clean any leakage up thoroughly. |
