Active Ingredients: bicalutamide

Indications
Casodex is indicated, in combination with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog, in the treatment of a certain stage of prostate cancer (D2 metastatic carcinoma of the prostate).
How It Works
Bicalutamide is an oral non-steroidal anti-androgen
Casodex belongs to a class of drugs called anti-androgens which
prevent the action of androgens by blocking the receptors for androgens on the cells of tissues, for example, the cells of the prostate gland. In addition to normal prostate cells, androgens also have been shown to stimulate the growth of cancer cells within the prostate. Bicalutamide is thought to prevent the growth of prostate cancer by blocking the effects of androgens on the cancer cells.
Dosage
Available tablet sizes: 50 mg, 150 mg
The recommended dose for Casodex therapy in combination with an LHRH analog is one 50 mg tablet once daily, with or without food. It is recommended that Casodex be taken at the same time each day. Casodex treatment should be started at the same time as LHRH analog treatment. Do not increase your dose or stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor.

Bicalutamide is not recommended for use in women or children.
Bicalutamide must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult with your doctor before breast-feeding.
Based on its mechanism of action, Casodex may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Casodex is contraindicated in women, including those who are or may become pregnant. If this drug is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to a fetus.
The safety and effectiveness of Casodex in pediatric patients have not been established

Adverse/Side Effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, constipation, general body aches, dizziness, nausea, increased urination, cough, swelling or tenderness of the breasts or decreased sexual desire. Inform your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms continue or become severe.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following effects develop: breathing trouble, swelling of the hands or feet, bloody urine, depression, flu-like symptoms (fever, chills), unusual weakness. Rarely, serious (possibly fatal) liver disease could occur.
Seek immediate medical attention if these side effects occur: dark urine, stomach pain, yellowing eyes/skin, extreme fatigue.
