Uroxatral, alfuzosin

Chemical Names
Alfuzosin

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: alfuzosin
Non-Active Ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide (NF), ethylcellulose (NF), hydrogenated castor oil (NF), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (USP), magnesium stearate (NF), mannitol (USP), microcrystalline cellulose (NF), povidone (USP), and yellow ferric oxide (NF).

Indications
Uroxatral is indicated in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

How It Works
Alfuzosin is an alpha blocker – a chemical that blocks the action of bodily chemicals responsible for prostate growth. Since benign prostatic hyperplasia is a disorder characterized entirely by prostate inflammation in the absence of a more serious causative factor, preventing prostate growth is the simplest way to treat the disorder.

Dosage
Available extended-release tablet sizes: 10 mg

The recommended dosage is one 10 mg Uroxatral extended-release tablet once daily. The extent of absorption of Uroxatral is 50% lower under fasting conditions. Therefore, Uroxatral should be taken immediately after the same meal each day.

Take this medication by mouth usually once daily after a meal; or as directed by your doctor. Do not crush or chew this medication. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.

To avoid injuries such as a fall, take your first dose(s) of alfuzosin at bedtime until your body adjusts to the effect of the medicine. Also, any time the dosage of this drug is changed, take your first new dose at bedtime.

Precautions
Uroxatral should not be used by women or children. If it is used in women for any unapproved indications, it should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.

Consult a doctor before taking Uroxatral if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of liver problems, cancer or other prostate gland problems, heart problems, kidney disease, hypertension, cataracts, or any allergies.

This drug may make you dizzy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages while taking Uroxatral.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Uroxatral if you are taking any other alpha blockers, ketoconazole, itraconazole, macrolide antibiotics, cimetidine, rifampin, St John’s wort, ritonavir, anti-seizure medications, grapefruit, or blood pressure medications.
