Indications
Oxsosaralen is indicated in the treatment of severe psoriasis that has proved unresponsive to other therapies, or when a biopsy has been performed and supports a positive diagnosis. This medication is meant to be taken only in combination with a program of ultraviolet radiation.
 
How It Works
Oxsosaralen is used to treat psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo by modifying the method by which skin cells collect UVA radiation.  
 
Dosage
Tablets (10mg)
 
The recommended initial dose of Oxsosaralen is dependent upon the weight of the individual receiving treatment. The initial dose for patients weighing less than 66 pounds is 10mg. This dosage increases with weight. Those weighing more than 254 pounds should take 70mg with each treatment. Consult a physician before beginning UVA treatment in combination with Oxsosaralen.
 
Tablets should be consumed between 1.5 to two hours before UVA exposure. Low fat food or milk should be consumed at the time of administration of the medication.

Precautions
Oxsosaralen is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Oxsosaralen.
 
Exposure to UVA rays may cause accelerated aging of the skin.
 
Patients with or having a history of basal cell carcinomas should advise the attending physician and be under strict observation during treatment.
 
Patients who have previously undergone x-ray therapy or grenz ray therapy should advise the attending physician and be under strict observation during treatment.
 
Patients who have previously undergone arsenic therapy should advise the attending physician and be under strict observation during treatment.
 
Patients who currently have, or have a history of cardiac disease may be unable to withstand the rigors of UVA therapy. 
 
It is unknown whether this medication will cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Oxsosaralen, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is unknown whether Oxsosaralen will pass into breast milk and cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding a baby.
 
You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to methoxsalen or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Oxsosaralen.
 
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Oxsosaralen if you are taking any other medications.
 
Before using this Oxsosaralen, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Oxsosaralen works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
 
Adverse/Side Effects
It is not uncommon for Oxsosaralen to cause the following minor side effects: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, loss of energy, rash, gastrointestinal difficulties, leg cramps and tender skin. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional.
 
If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
