Use and absorption of topical corticosteroids may sometimes produce reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) suppression and/or manifestations of Cushing’s syndrome in some patients. Clobetasol propionate may suppress the HPA axis at doses as low as 2 g/day. Conditions that increase systemic absorption include applying corticosteroids over large surface areas, prolonged use, or use in areas where the skin is broken.
