In combination with other drugs such as Prevacid and Biaxin, it is also used to treat duodenal ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria. How It Works Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. When unwanted bacteria have infected the body, the presence of amoxicillin can disrupt the bacterial cell walls, eventually causing cell death, yet leaving the surrounding non-bacterial cells unharmed. Amoxicillin is usually taken orally every 8 hours, with or without food, at a dosage determined by your doctor for your specific illness. For most infections, the standard dosage is 250 mg, three times a day. For lower respiratory tract infections, the dose is 500 mg three times daily. For urinary/genital infections (including gonorrhea), a single dose of 3 grams will do.
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
