Cipro, ciprofloxacinChemical Namesciprofloxacin Ingredients Oral tablets: Active ingredients: ciprofloxacin Non-active ingredients: cornstarch, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, crospovidone, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, and polyethylene glycol. Ear drops Active ingredients: ciprofloxacin, dexamethasone Inactive ingredients: povidone, glycerin, and water for injection. Sodium hydroxide and/or lactic acid may be added to adjust pH. Indications Cipro is indicated in the treatment of infections caused by E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, Proteus mirabilis, Providencia rettgeri, Morganella morganii, Citrobacter diversus, citrobacter freundii, pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-suseptible Staphylococcus epideridis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus and enterococcus faecalis. In terms of bodily location, Cipro can treat urinary tract infections (complicated and uncomplicated), acute uncomplicated cystitis in females, chronic bacterial prostatitis, lower respiratory tract infections, acute sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections (in combination with metronidazole), infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, pyelonephritis (pediatric), inhalational anthrax, and acute otitis externa. How It Works Ciprofloxacin stops the multiplication of bacteria by inhibiting the reproduction and repair of their genetic material (DNA). Dosage Oral tablets (250 mg, 500 mg, 750 mg, 1000 mg) Ear drops (0.3% 10ml). contains 3 mg/mL (3000 µg/mL) ciprofloxacin and 1 mg/mL dexamethasone. Oral tablets: Take Cipro tablets in the morning and the evening, at the same time each day. Do not split tablet. Swallow each tablet whole, with or without food. For acute, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, two daily doses of 250 mg for 3 days will suffice. If the urinary tract infection is more severe, the schedule can be extended to 7 to 14 days. If the urinary tract infection is complicated, 500 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days will suffice. For uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonoccocal infections, a single dose of 250 mg is all that is required. For treatment for inhalational anthrax, 500 mg twice daily for 60 days is standard. Note that this is only post-exposure – do not take Cipro pre-emptively for anthrax. For all other indicated and susceptible infections, 500 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days is standard. However, this regimen lasts for different lengths in certain infections: 5 to 7 days in case of infectious diarrhea, 10 days for sinusitis and typhoid fever, 28 days for chronic bacterial prostatitis, and 4 to 6 weeks for bone and joint infections. Ear drops: For treating ear infections: hold the bottle in your hand for a few minutes to make it warm. Shake the solution well and place 4 drops into the affected ear. Be careful not to let the tip of the bottle touch your fingers, the person's ear, or any other surface into the affected ear twice daily (approximately 12 hours apart) for 7 days. The person should remain lying with the ear up for at least 1 minute. If both ears are affected, repeat the procedure on the other side. Consult a doctor before taking Cipro if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, if you are allergic to any quinolone antibiotics, or if you have or have a history of tendon disorders, epilepsy, central nervous system disorders, irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), kidney disease, arthritis, difficulty swallowing pills, or ear drum perforation. Cipro can cause side effects that may be serious and can even cause death. If you experience any tendon inflammation or pain, notify your doctor immediately. The risk of tendon problems is higher if you: are over 60, are taking steroids, have had a kidney or lung transplant, have had tendon problems in the past, have had rheumatoid arthritis problems, or engage in strenuous physical activity. Do not operate heavy machinery while on Cipro as the medication has been known to cause drowsiness. Ciprofloxacin should be administered at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after magnesium/aluminum antacids, or sucralfate, Videx® (didanosine) chewable/buffered tablets or pediatric powder for oral solution, other highly buffered drugs, or other products containing calcium, iron or zinc.
