Niaspan, niacinChemical NameNiacin Ingredients Active Ingredients: Niacin Non-Active Ingredients: Hypromellose, povidone, stearic acid, and polyethylene glycol, and the following coloring agents: FD&C yellow #6/sunset yellow FCF Aluminum Lake, synthetic red and yellow iron oxides, and titanium dioxide. Indications Niaspan is used to treat high cholesterol in patients who are also undergoing therapy with a healthy diet and active exercise regime. How It Works Niaspan reduces cholesterol by inhibiting the breakdown of fat in the adipose tissue. Dosage Tablets (375 mg, EU 500 mg, 500 mg) Niaspan should be taken in incremental dosages, with lower doses in the first four weeks, followed by higher doses in the ensuing treatment time. Most dosages start at 500 mg per day, with the medication to be administered before bed. A doctor will prescribe the correct dosages for the incremental elevations. Precautions Niaspan is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Niaspan, or in patients with hepatic impairment, jaundice, or peptic ulcers.
