Xenical, orlistatChemical NamesOrlistat Ingredients Active Ingredients: Orlistat Non-Active Ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, sodium lauryl sulfate, povidone, and talc. Each capsule shell contains gelatin, titanium dioxide, and FD&C Blue No. 1, aluminum lake. Indications Xenical is indicated in the treatment of obesity, for weight loss and for weight management. How It Works Orlistat is a drug that promotes weight loss by preventing the digestion and absorption of fat in the food you eat. During digestion an enzyme called lipase breaks apart fat in food so that it can be digested and absorbed by the body. Orlistat blocks the action of lipase meaning that the body just doesn’t absorb that fat, and eventually it just gets passed in one’s stool. Orlistat blocks approximately 25% of fat ingested. Dosage Tablet (60 mg, 120 mg) The recommended dosage of Xenical is one capsule (120 mg) three times a day. Take Xenical an hour after or during a meal containing 15 mg of fat or more. Xenical need not be taken with meals containing no fat or very little fat (< 10 mg). Precautions Consult a doctor before taking Xenical if you are allergic to Orlistat, or if you have gallbladder problems, or chronic malabsorption syndrome (inability to absorb nutrients properly). Before taking Orlistat, tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid, a history of gallstones or pancreatitis, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, an eating disorder, if you are on any sort of special diet, or if you take other weight-loss medications. Do not give Orlistat to a child younger than 18 years old. Xenical (orlistat) should not be used by anyone under 18 without the advice of a doctor. Your doctor may recommend you take vitamin and mineral supplements while you are taking Xenical because this medication can make it harder for your body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. Follow your doctor's instructions and take any multi-vitamin or mineral supplement suggested. Supplements should be taken at least 2 hours before or after you take Xenical. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. When nursing however taking Orlistat can make it harder for your body to absorb certain vitamins. These vitamins are important to the nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding.
